What is a birth doula and their essential purpose?

A birth doula is labor assistant that provides physical, emotional, and mental support to a laboring women. A doula does NOT perform any type of medical procedures, such as a medical professional. Doula work is a passion, a calling that allows for the therapeutic nature of another individual to offer to you and your partner continuous support and encouragement throughout your labour and birth. A doula respects and honours your decisions regarding your labour and works closely with you to help you achieve your ideal birth.

Will a Birth Doula take the place of my partner??

A birth doula will never take the place of your partner. A doula is there to assist you both in the birth of your child. A doula supports not only the birthing woman, but her partner as well, providing him/her with a trusted friend to turn to when he may be having difficulty understanding the process and what his/her love is experiencing. She works with partners to provide them with additional tools to help the birthing woman locate their inner resources and when necessary help them to focus and remain on track. She is the guide, but can never replace a partner’s role, for she can never love the woman in the same way, and understand her nuances and intimacies.
